What do you write about, Mike?

You may have heard that we are in the late stages of capitalism, which is crumbling under the weight of its own contradictions, and perhaps the conditions are finally ripe for socialist solutions to our problems. Or, you may have been told that liberalism is under assault by illiberal forces who are preying on the instability caused by new technologies or global corporations, and today’s fights will decide who or what succeeds the rules-based liberalism of the twentieth century.

I think—I know—both those stories are wrong. In fact, they are exactly backwards: it is socialism, in the form of managerial welfare states, that is in its late stages all over the world—from China, to the EU, to America—and it is a renewed liberalism that is quietly emerging from the darkness.

This blog is my attempt to work through these questions. You will find in your inbox newsletters and essays about the conversations and arguments that are happening underneath the news, about the new ideas and alliances that are being formed, about the future that is struggling to be born.

Who are you, Mike?

I’m Mike Wavsz, an attorney and mentor to entrepreneurs, artists, and other creatives. I write most often about American constitutional law and history from a non-partisan, or even anti-partisan, perspective. I read old books and old cases to understand the conflicts and arguments we see in America today, and to position myself and my readers to meaningfully participate in the next stage of the American Experiment.
